Sydney jet ski ban remains
NSW Maritime has dismissed a push to overturn the ban on jet skis on Sydney Harbour citing public safety concerns.
A recently formed lobby group, Jet Ski Sydney Harbour, approached NSW Maritime with a proposal to allow personal water craft back on Sydney Harbour after they were banned in 2001.
In a letter to Sydney's Daily Telegraph the group claimed noise and pollution concerns were no longer valid with recent developments in PWC technology.
"The key argument passed through parliament was that jet skis were noisy and bad for the environment, this point was never actually proven," said Jet Ski Sydney Harbour's Domenic Favaloro.
"New jet skis are actually quieter than a small runabout boat and that jet propulsion is actually less harmful on the environment than a boats propeller system."
NSW Maritime dismissed the proposal on the grounds of public safety citing a minority of "hoons" would make the Harbour too dangerous if the ban was overturned.
"NSW Maritime is always happy to hear these sorts of proposals, however I can confirm that Maritime is not going to overturn the ban on PWCs in Sydney Harbour," said a NSW Maritime spokesman.
"The problem of noise was part of the issue in 2001, but it was only part of the issue ... rider behaviour and public safety concerns are still a major issue."
